TOKARARANGI SPORTS CLUB, TE ARAROA

Tokararangi Rugby Club was established around 1916 and had affiliated with it, women’s hockey and netball teams. Tokararangi players were recruited from the area East of Awatere River to East Cape, and at times, Rangitukia. With the high and constant population then, participation in all sporting activities occurred right through to the early 1960’s. After that period, as a result of urban drift, Tokararangi Rugby Club went into recess as a Club, whereby combining with the Te Araroa City and Wanderers Clubs for approx 15-20 years. This amalgamated team continued until 1981, when a significant number of senior members of the community who had affillitations to the original Tokararangi Club, and, who had been unable to associate themselves with any other Club, decided to re-establish themselves as Tokararangi Rugby Club. This re-establishment saw the Club - through sheer commitment to fundraising by the members at the time - build their Clubrooms within four years,. A grant of $5,000.00 was also presented by the Hon Peter Tapsell to help install electrical wiring and a verandah. Tokararangi Sports Club, from it’s inception to today, have made high achievements, not only with senior rugby, but also with other sporting codes. Our rangatahi have also made inroads in their various sports and have travelled both locally and nationally. Today, one of our priorities is to nurture our “rangatahi”, by helping them achieve whatever sporting code they wish to pursue. “Whakapono kia koe. Stand proud, be strong nga tamariki, nga mokopuna a Tokararangi, so that your tamariki and mokopuna can carry the seed that has been sown by our tupuna.”
